April 2026 – Theatre Visit – Calendar Girls

In April, we visited the Ilkley Playhouse to enjoy the amateur production of Calendar Girls. This inspiring story is rooted in Wharfedale, where a group of WI ladies created a calendar with a difference to raise funds after the loss of a friend.

The story went on to achieve global recognition, becoming a film and a musical with music by Gary Barlow of Take That. This heart-warming production celebrates friendship, courage, humour, and community spirit — and is truly not to be missed.

Summer Excursions

Scenic Dales Drive & Afternoon Tea

As the vibrant colours of spring give way to the warmth of summer, we are excited to announce our popular annual Scenic Dales Drives. This year, we will once again indulge in the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, culminating in a delightful afternoon tea at the picturesque Cavendish Pavilions, Bolton Abbey. Our excursions are designed to provide a serene escape, with three separate outings planned to ensure everyone has the opportunity to soak in the breathtaking landscapes and enjoy a leisurely afternoon with friends. Each year, around ninety of our cherished clients join us for this free event, made possible this year by the generous contributions from The Barchester Care. Join us for an unforgettable day filled with stunning views, tasty treats, and the joy of companionship.

Barchester Care Donation for Afternoon Tea Events

We are delighted to announce that we have received a generous donation of £1,000 from Barchester Care, helping to fund our popular annual scenic drives for local older people.
The donation was presented by Kay Thompson, Activities Coordinator at Barchester – The Dales Care Home, and will support three scenic bus outings.

The trips, which conclude with afternoon tea, offer members the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, spend time with friends, and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. Anita Dunford, Trustee of Ilkley and District Good Neighbours, said: “On behalf of everyone at Ilkley and District Good Neighbours, I would like to express our sincere thanks to Barchester Care for this generous donation of £1,000.

This wonderful contribution will help fund our three annual scenic drives, followed by afternoon tea, for our members, many of whom are older residents of Ilkley and the surrounding district. These outings provide a much-valued opportunity for people to enjoy a day out, socialise, and experience the beautiful local countryside. We are extremely grateful for Barchester’s support, which helps make these special events
possible.”

Kay Thompson said: “We are delighted to support Ilkley and District Good Neighbours and the valuable work they do within the local community. Helping older people stay connected, enjoy new experiences and reduce social isolation is something we are passionate about, and we are pleased that this donation will help make these wonderful outings possible.”

Ilkley and District Good Neighbours are dedicated to supporting older people through friendship, practical assistance and social activities, helping them to remain active, independent and connected within their community.

Alternative Afternoon Tea Trip

For clients who prefer a gentler outing, this year, we introduced a local alternative afternoon tea at Moss & Moore Garden Centre in Ilkley.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious tea in the company of friends, sharing conversation and laughter. The event was so successful that it will now become a regular part of our programme, offering another opportunity for connection and enjoyment.
